Let Queuenoodle Remind to Watch Those Streaming Netflix Movies Before They Expire [Video]

Sure, you can see which Watch Instantly movies are expiring when you check your queue on the Netflix website. But now that my DVD queue is on autopilot and I only stream videos from my Roku box, I don’t get around to visiting the Netflix site all that often. But I do check my Twitter alot, so I’m thankful Queuenoodle is around to tell me when movies are set to expire. [Queuenoodle] More »

Early-stage VC Javelin Venture Partners has closed a second, $105 million fund. The firm expects to use the money to fund around 20 companies over three years in seed and Series A rounds ranging from $500K to $3 million, and will reserve some of the funds for subsequent rounds raised by these portfolio companies. Doyle founded online loyalty program MyPoints.com and was an executive at Keyhole (which was acquired by Google and became Google Earth). Katz founded Rent.net and Move.com. Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo coming ‘in a few weeks’

firefoxJay Sullivan, Mozilla’s vice president of products, has told the IDG News Service at the Mobile World Congress that Firefox 4 for Android will ship in a few weeks. We should expect to see one more beta version this week, and then the final build soon after.

Sullivan also tells IDG about Firefox for Mobile‘s extensive feature set — 150 add-ons will be available! — and Mozilla’s overall move to a faster, quarterly release cycle.

Android already has a lot of competent browsers, but an HTML5-rendering, hardware-accelerated and sync-enabled offering would blow the rest of the competition out of the water.

AppBrain direct push-to-device app installation returns, emasculates Google’s Android Market

The supremo Android app discovery site, AppBrain, has re-enabled direct push-to-phone app install functionality.

Like before, you still need to install the Fast Web Installer app and AppBrain app on your Android device (QR codes after the break). You also need to open the Fast Web Installer app on your phone and give it permission to install apps. Then, it’s simply a matter of clicking ‘Install’ on the AppBrain website and waiting a few seconds for the app to whiz its way across the interwebs to your device.

It’s worth noting that you can now uninstall apps from the AppBrain control panel, too — or mass-install apps on a new phone!

You still can’t use the AppBrain website to buy apps — and apps that aren’t available in your territory will simply fail to transfer. Still, there’s no avoiding the fact that this simple change makes Google’s first-party Android Market website all but useless.

There’s a video of AppBrain’s push-to-device Fast Web Installer after the break.

Sprint evaluating switch to LTE over the next four to six months

Sprint has had an on again / off again relationship with LTE for some time now, but it looks it may finally be nearing a commitment one way or the other. Speaking in a roundtable discussion at Mobile World Congress this week, Sprint’s Senior Vice President of Networks, Bob Azzi, said that the carrier would be studying the rate at which its customers migrate from EV-DO to mobile WiMAX over the next four to six months, and that it would evaluate the best way to use its existing spectrum before it reaches a firm decision on a possible switch to LTE. As we’ve heard previously, that switch would be a fairly straightforward one from a technical standpoint due to the carrier’s recent upgrades to its network, which allow it to upgrade its gear to LTE simply by swapping in a new baseband card and issuing a software patch.

Webmail: older people using it more, teens tossing it aside

Taking a look at comScore’s comparison of 2009 vs. 2010 webmail use, a couple things are pretty clear. Older users are finally starting to see how Web-based email is useful and getting into the swing of things. That, in turn, seems to be causing teenagers to turn up their noses and flee services like Gmail and Hotmail in droves.

OK, maybe it’s not the increase in older users causing teens to leave — it’s more probable that young users are more likely to use other methods to communicate like Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging.

A while back, Mark Zuckerberg claimed that email was dead, and he certainly seems to be right on the money in terms of people under the age of 18.

Winamp sneak peek: Android app to bring UI updates, voice and genre search

Nullsoft, now with over 250,000 Winamp for Android downloads under its belt, is gearing up for a new release in March, and we’ve been lucky enough to get our hands on an early alpha build. You may want to leap straight into the gallery to look at the updated UI — but if not, read on! [Disclaimer: Nullsoft and Download Squad are both owned by AOL.]

The most obvious change is a completely-overhauled UI. The home screen features bigger buttons, and the Search button has been replaced with Genre — yes, you can now search and browse by genre — and everything looks slightly darker, slicker and cooler.

The Now Playing screen has been updated to match the home screen’s aesthetic. The UI is tighter, tidier, but a little bit ‘Web 2.0′ if we’re brutally honest. Now Playing also features left- and right-swipe gestures to go back and forward through an album or playlist. Hopefully we’ll see even more gestures added in later versions, like double tapping to pause and swiping up to return to your playlist.

ASUS still considering Windows Phone 7 device, carriers ‘key factor’

As you may be aware, ASUS was one of the first companies to officially hop on board with Windows Phone 7, and it even produced some prototype devices (like the one pictured in the middle above) that were used by engineers and developers in the lead-up to the big launch (some 5,000 of them, apparently). As you may have also noticed, ASUS still hasn’t actually released a Windows Phone 7 device for consumers — although that may finally be set to change. Speaking with Forbes at Mobile World Congress, ASUS exec Benson Lin revealed that the company did actually have a first-generation product that it was ready to go market with, but it held back because it realized it “didn’t have the bandwidth” and lacked the carrier support it would need to support another new cellphone initiative. Lin went on to say that while ASUS is still assessing Windows Phone 7, the company feels ready for it, and he will personally be meeting with carriers at MWC over the rest of the week to gauge their interest, which he notes will be a “key factor” in determining ASUS’ strategy going forward.

Immunet 3.0 antivirus debuts, brings ClamAV integration for offline protection

One shortcoming of previous versions of Immunet Protect — the upstart cloud antivirus recently added to the Google Pack — was that it needed to be plugged into the cloud in order to provide meaningful protection. That’s not a big minus since most of us are online 24-7, but with Immunet’s acquisition by Sourcefire it became important to address the needs of network administrators. And administrators often pull the network plug when they suspect an infection has been found, which makes the cloud rather hard to access.

With the release of Immunet 3.0, however, that has changed: Sourcefire’s ClamAV is now part of Immunet’s defensive weaponry. On a new install, Immunet will offer itself straight-up, or you can choose the Immunet + ClamAV pairing. With ClamAV bolted on, your system always has access to current definitions and can detect and remove infections even when offline. Another very cool feature is that Immunet 3.0 supports custom definitions using its built-in signature configuration tool. That means if you’ve got the know-how you can add your own detection scripts.

Immunet Protect and Immunet Protect with ClamAV are both totally free, and Immunet Protect Plus will run you $39.95 for two years of protection on three computers (or $19.95 for one/one). Existing users who upgrade can activate ClamAV protection on the program’s settings page.

HTC launches 1.5GHz, 7-inch Android 2.4 Flyer into the tablet wars

Boy oh boy, HTC is entering the tablet arena with quite a bang. The company has just taken the wraps off its brand new 7-inch Flyer Android tablet, which touts a 1.5GHz single-core CPU, 1GB of RAM plus 32GB of flash storage, an aluminum unibody construction, 1024 x 600 resolution, a tablet-optimized version of Sense, and… what’s this, a pressure-sensitive capacitive stylus! The HTC Scribe trademark we saw floating around in legal waters turned out not to be the branding for a tablet, it’s actually the name HTC gives to the technology enabling what it calls a “groundbreaking pen experience.” Other details include a 5 megapixel camera on the back paired with a 1.3 megapixel imager up front, a 4000mAh battery rated to last for four hours of continuous video playback, and memory expandability via a microSD card.

The Flyer will ship in Q2 2011 with Android Gingerbread 2.4 on board. HTC says it’ll be indistinguishable from 2.3 as far the end user is concerned, though we all know it won’t be quite as good as the 3.0 stuff. We’re told not to worry, however, since the new version of Sense being introduced with the Flyer will be the focal point of the company’s software offering. As far as HTC is concerned, Sense matters more than the underlying platform, and the reason Honeycomb isn’t the shipping OS here was explicitly stated as HTC not having enough time with the latest Google code to customize it to the full requirements of Sense. Guess that settles that.

There are a couple more software enhancements, both marking the introduction of the fruits of HTC’s recent deals: OnLive cloud gaming will be coming with the Flyer in the form of an app you open up to access the web-connected bored-relieving service, while that Saffron Digital acquisition has turned into an HTC Watch app for movie streaming and downloading.

We spent a bit of quality time with a Flyer unit recently, although we weren’t allowed to turn it on, and our early impressions are rather mixed. On the one hand, we do appreciate the ruggedness and durability that’s afforded by the one-piece aluminum shell, but on the other, the Flyer is quite the chunky beast in your hands. We’d imagine strapping in such an extra-speedy processor is the main culprit for its extra girth, though the Flyer is, ironically enough, not terribly light either. We found it heavier and generally a lot less polished from a design perspective than Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Anyhow, HTC should have functional units for us immediately following its MWC presser this morning, and we’ll be delving in deeper with this super-specced device. Hang tight!

Amazon MP3 Android app update saves battery and data

If your Android phone shipped with the Amazon MP3 app pre-installed, you may have found yourself frustrated by a couple things. First, it’s not so easy to remove. Second, the app had a nasty habit of starting up automatically when you power on or reboot your phone whether you wanted it to or not — making the fact that you can’t remove it even more vexing.

Fortunately, Amazon has finally pushed an updated Amazon MP3 app to the Android Market and the startup bug has now been fixed. Installing the new version will free up a little bit of memory and processor headroom on your Android device, possibly give you a bit more battery life, and — most importantly — give you control over when it fires up.

The updated app also adds an option to resume downloads. It’s disabled by default, so head to the settings screen if you want to flip the switch.

HP webOS 3.0 SDK released to developers

HP managed to keep webOS 3.0 pretty well off the radar until the Think Beyond event, when it was in full display on the company’s new TouchPad tablet. Now that the new OS has been outed, it’s time for HP to get developers involved. Developers who are members of the formerly-Palm Early Access channel can now download the webOS 3.0 SDK (codenamed ‘Enyo’). You’ll need to email pdc@palm.com to get your hands on it, though.

Interestingly, Enyo is totally resolution-independent — meaning developers can use it to create apps for the lilliputian Veer or the big, beefy TouchPad. There will be a bit of a learning curve for those who have developed with Palm’s Mojo SDK, but HP did state that older Mojo-based apps will still be supported in the new SDK.

Enyo also has hardware acceleration chops, which should allow devs to deliver plenty of great apps. Now we’ll just have to wait and see whether or not HP can get them interested enough to code for the platform.
